What is Inconel 625 (UNS N06625)?

Inconel® 625 (also marketed as Chronin® 625, Altemp® 625, Haynes® 625, Nickelvac® 625, and Nicrofer® 6020) is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum-niobium alloy designed for strength and corrosion resistance in extreme environments. It is particularly effective in environments exposed to seawater, acids, and high temperatures, and does not require precipitation hardening due to its solid solution strengthening.

  • Exceptional corrosion and oxidation resistance
  • High tensile, fatigue, and creep-rupture strength
  • Outstanding resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and chloride stress corrosion cracking
  • Operating temperature range: cryogenic to 1093°C (2000°F)
  • Excellent weldability and ease of fabrication

Applications of Inconel 625

Because of its versatile properties, Inconel 625 is widely used in:

  • Chemical processing: reactors, heat exchangers, transfer piping
  • Aerospace: exhaust systems, thrust-reverser systems, turbine shrouds
  • Marine and offshore: seawater components, mooring cables, piping systems
  • Power generation: heat shields, fuel lines, superheater tubing
  • Pollution control systems: scrubbers, ducting, and stack liners
  • Nuclear energy: control rod components, reactor cores

Machining & Welding Characteristics

Inconel 625 work-hardens quickly, requiring rigid tooling and slow-speed machining with heavy feeds to minimize surface work hardening. Welding can be performed using GTAW (TIG) or GMAW (MIG) processes, with Inconel 625 filler metals. It demonstrates minimal susceptibility to post-weld cracking and is often used for overlay cladding due to its weldability and corrosion resistance.
